Abstract
Purpose: In these days, inguinal hernia repair with mesh is the standardized surgical method. While, laparoscopic-hernia repair may reduce postoperative pain and help faster recovery, the open mesh technique is used in more than eighty percent of the inguinal hernia repair. The effectiveness of the two different preformed meshes in the inguinal hernia repair were compared in this study.

Methods: A total of 399 patients underwent the hernia repair by using laparoscopic mesh surgery and open mesh surgery from December 2011 to June 2014. They were divided into two groups, in which the two preformed meshes were compared. PHS was used in 197 cases while MK patch was used in 202 cases. The information of the each patient was obtained from hospital computer network.

Results: The distribution of inguinal hernia location was similar between two groups. The average operation time of inguinal hernia repair with PHS group was 57.5 minutes with the standard deviation of 18.3. For the other group with MK patch, the average time was 51.3 minutes with a standard deviation of 14.8. The study showed a shorter operation time in MK patch group (P=0.003). Among Within the MK group, one group a sample size of (n=63) participants was repaired with spermatic cord elevation. The other group was repaired without spermatic cord elevation. Spermatic cord elevation group took 52.1 minutes, while the other group took 49.7 minutes (P=0.244). Some of the common complications after the surgery were hematoma, seroma and wound swelling. The rate of complication for the two groups was 9.6% and 9.5%, respectively. There was no significant difference between the two groups.

Conclusion: The study established that the operation time of inguinal hernia repair with MK patch is shorter than PHS.
